Chinese Remedies For Back Pain

The Traditional Uses Of Chinese Remedies For Back Pain And How They Can Help You.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is the oldest form of recorded medicine in history. It is also the oldest form of medicine that is still currently in practice. Many of the principals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, revolve around the balance of Chi; an energy force that practitioners believe pervades the body. When pain plagues the body there is usually an imbalance of yin and yang; the two components of Chi. If one part of the body is affected it usually relates to another organ system. For example, rheumatic illness might be related to damp or cold (too much yin) kidneys. When Chi is in balance, TCM practitioners believe that the body is also balanced and can heal.

Applications of Chinese remedies for back pain are varied, but of all these, herbs and acupuncture seem to be the preferred choices. A first line herb that is used for traumatic injury is Qi Ye Lian, which contains cordyalis and schefflera. For long term or degenerative back pain, Xu Duan is often recommended. Xu Duan or dispacus, helps with weak kidneys and nourishing blow flow to muscles. Topical application is sometimes prescribed. Other options include Du Zong, Bu Gu Zhi, Niu Xi, Hong Hua, Wu Jian Pi, and Shu Di Huang.

Many of these herbs can be combined for optimal treatment, since they each relieve different problems contributing to the back pain. When acupuncture is used it is important to locate the source of pain. If the pain originates in the lower back it can mean something vastly different than if it comes from the upper back. Chi can be either stuck, in excess, or too low. Acupuncture needles are then inserted into flow points painlessly to either redirect or unblock Chi energy. Some studies have even suggested that acupuncture can be as or more effective than pain killers for certain types of back pain.
