Back Pain And Surgery

Important Facts About The Best Back Pain And Surgery Procedures.

Most back pain disappears without surgical intervention. However, a small percentage needs to be rectified through surgery but this only happens where non-surgical medical and alternative treatments do not work. Back surgery is only used in cases where your spinal nerves are compressed, or if have ruptured discs, broken bones, bone deformities or vertebral fractures. Basically, any condition that leaves your spine vulnerable requires surgery. There are different types of back pain surgery. These include fusion, diskectomy, laminectomy, artificial disks and vertebroplasty. The choice of surgery depends on the specific problem you have. Fusion is done to connect two or more bones in the spine.

Diskectomy is done to remove the herniated part of the disc, which in turn relieves nerve irritation and inflammation. Laminectomy is carried out to relieve nerve pressure where a patient has spinal stenosis. The procedure involves removing the bone that covers the spinal canal, thus enlarging the spinal canal and easing pressure. In vertebroplasty, bone cement is injected into compressed vertebrae to stabilize fractures and ease pain. A more advanced procedure involves inserting a balloon-like device into the vertebrae to enlarge the compressed vertebrae and then the bone cement is injected. Artificial discs are the newest surgical technology. They can be used as an alternative to fusion, where the discs are inserted between two vertebrae where there is an injured disc.

This helps prevent friction between the two, which is usually the cause of pain. It is important to remember that back pain surgery is not primarily done to eliminate back pain, but to correct underlying neurological problems. If the problem is fixed, the pain usually goes away. However, there is no guarantee that surgery will eradicate the pain. This is why it is important to think through the decision whether to have surgery or not. If you have no neurological problems, it is advisable to treat back pain using non-surgical treatments instead.
